Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Bibliographic Control

Abstract

The paper discusses bibliographic control, information and communications technology, and artificial intelligence, the meeting points and how they enhance the discoverability of research and learning resources. Artificial intelligence is defined as an assistive tool that has the potential of transforming bibliographic control, though it must be used within ethical limitations. Bibliographic control involves the documentation, discoverability and accessibility of data. A brief history of the development of bibliographic is discussed. The need to train librarians and library patrons is affirmed as a strategic requirement in bibliographic control in the age of artificial intelligence. Ethical issues that must be considered in the deployment of artificial intelligence in bibliographic control include data integrity, breaking down pay and other walls, intellectual property, shareability of data, and open movement.
